Director of films and operas, producer

Jan Schmidt-Garre studied directing with Rudolf Noelte, David Esrig and Jean-Pierre Ponnelle as well as at the Munich Film Academy (feature film department). He studied philosophy at the Munich University of Philosophy. Opera productions in Germany and Switzerland. Most recently: Capriccio at the Leipzig Opera House.

He has made numerous documentaries and feature films on the subjects of music, dance and contemporary art. His films have been screened in thirty countries, shown at many festivals and in cinemas, and released on laser disc and DVD (edition with Arthaus Musik) as well as online. Recent theatrical releases include: The Alchemy of the Piano

Jan Schmidt-Garre received awards at the German Film Prize (nomination), Chicago Film Festival (silver medal), Cannes (Midem Classical Award), Monte Carlo (Dance Screen), Munich (Sponsorship award), Ohio (Columbus Award), Paris (Classique en images), and Prague (Czech Crystal). International Classical Music Award ICMA.
